Our Story
JamWatHQ was born from a simple observation: thousands of Jamaican students embark on J-1 work and travel programs each year, but finding reliable, Jamaica-specific information was surprisingly difficult.
As a Jamaican student who went through the J-1 process myself, I experienced firsthand the frustration of:
- Scattered information across multiple websites
- Conflicting advice from different sources
- Generic guides not tailored to Jamaican applicants
- Lack of authentic experiences from fellow Jamaicans
- Uncertainty about agencies and which ones to trust

So I built JamWatHQ — a platform by Jamaicans, for Jamaicans seeking J-1 opportunities.

Why Sponsor Choice Matters
Here's something critical many students don't realize: When you apply for a J-1 visa, your sponsor organization's name appears on your DS-2019 form. This is the official document you present at your embassy interview.
The embassy sees which sponsor you chose — and choosing the wrong one can affect your entire experience.
The DS-2019 Reality
Your DS-2019 Certificate of Eligibility shows:
- Sponsor organization name (the agency that issued your DS-2019)
- Program category and duration
- Financial support details
- SEVIS number and program dates
Once you're assigned a sponsor, changing is difficult. You're committed to that organization for your entire program.
